as winner of the 2011 Southern Majors Open.
Congratulations! to Lynn Steelman of Crandall, GA
as Second Place runner up in 2011 Southern Majors Open, and Ken Shultz of
Cosby, TN
as Third Place. GM stands for Grand Master, IM
for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles
given by WCDF to distinguish accomplished players. Ratings are from the Eric Strange, ACF Ratings (through 2010). "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated
game points. Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. In the 9:00AM business meeting we elected to repair only in
the last
two rounds,
award the
bye to the lowest player and any repeat byes are only 2 points.
Southern will keep their same officers for another year, also during the meeting,
Dr. Robert Shuffett received honorable recognition by Frank Davis and
Larry Keen. They
acknowledge our admiration for his long list of accomplishment to the game. He was
presented a nice
plaque. This was a fitting tribute of his lifetime support of
checkers, publishing several books, sponsoring, and directing many tournaments and WTMs. We had 23 players from 8 states (10 Masters, 13 Majors played) 11 from
TN; 4 from NC; 2 from FL & KY; 1 from GA, LA, MS, OH. Several
others visited the tournament like Hugh & Peggy Burton. A number of Get-Well, Sympathy cards, and a Birthday card were
signed by all the players and mailed out to those particular players. We appreciated the donations and
contributions which totaled $1,131.00 for the cash prize fund.
We played two 1. 25
hour games per round, or an eight 2. 5 hour round tournament, starting at 11AM
on Friday and 8:00AM on Saturday and 8:00AM on Sunday. Many wives and friends attended, namely: Mary Davis, Shirley Lerum, Gayle Smith, Mickie Webster, Mrs Schwartz, Tiffany Stanley, Sue Tucker, Ms Boatman,
Paralee Shultz, Linda Choate, Judy Hughes, Betty Gain, and Bernice Powell. Frank and Mary, our referee and scorekeeper did a fantastic job as usual. We appreciate Americas Best Inn & Suites for hosting our pizza party, and keeping hot coffee available throughout our tournament. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all
who attended.
